Head Coach

Brian Smith has won more matches than any other coach in Millersville volleyball history and enters his 16th season as the program's head coach in 2025. Since taking over the program in 2010, Smith has returned the Marauders to perennial postseason contenders and mentored numerous players to record-setting careers and awards.

Smith, a 1987 graduate of Millersville University, led the program to back-to-back PSAC Tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013--a first at Millersville since 2004-05. In 2018, Smith guided the Marauders to their first divisional title and best PSAC winning percentage since 1999. In 2019, the Marauders won a school-record 26 matches and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995. He has produced eight winning seasons and guided the Marauders to the postseason five times.

He has coached 21 All-PSAC honorees including 2019 PSAC Athlete of the Year Jayci Suseland and three-time honoree Brooklyn Smith, who was also named PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year in 2013. This list also includes Caitlyn Callahan, who in 2021 became the sixth Marauder to be named PSAC East Rookie of the Year.

Five of Smith's players--Suseland, Lindsey Blevins, Allison Huss, Katie Lesinski and Erin Harman--entered into rare company at Millersville, totaling 1,000 career kills. They are five of just 11 Marauders to reach the milestone. Suseland set the program's all-time kills record. Lesinski also won the PSAC East Freshman of the Year Award in 2011. Harman was one of three players in program history with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Defensively, libero Brooklyn Smith set the school record for digs in a career with 2,429. In 2019, setter Katie Laughman set the single-season record for assists. In 2024, Emma Ludwig broke the program's career assists record.

Smith's players have now set records in career kills, career blocks, career digs, and career assists. Six of his setters rank in the top 10 in career assists and three others rank in the top 10 in career service aces.

Smith inherited a program that had missed the postseason for four consecutive seasons and had not posted an above-.500 record in a decade. Smith quickly turned the Marauders' fortunes with a postseason appearance in 2012. The Marauders then turned in a 16-16 record and 11-11 conference mark in 2013, marking the program's first .500 league record since 2005. The upward trend continued in 2015 as the Marauders finished 18-15 and posted the best start in program history (7-0) despite suffering season-ending injuries to its top two offensive players. In 2017, the Marauders' 18-10 record and .643 winning percentage was its best since 1998. The improvement continued in 2018 with a PSAC Southeast Division Championship. The 2019 team not only broke the school record for wins, it also went 14-0 at home in the regular season and won a NCAA Tournament match over Shippensburg. On Oct. 27, 2023, Smith became the first head coach in program history to reach 200 career victories with a 3-2 upset of Shepherd.

Prior to becoming the head coach, Smith was the program's assistant in 2010. For the four years prior, Smith served as a coach with the LAVA club volleyball team and has been the club director for the last three years. Smith also spent the 2008 season as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall.

In addition to his work at Franklin & Marshall and with LAVA, Smith coached the girls' junior varsity team at Lancaster Mennonite for four years before taking over the boys' varsity program for four years.

Smith gained playing experience during his time in the United States Marine Corps. From 1991-93, Smith was a member of the All-Marine Corps Volleyball Team. He also played at the USAV AA, A and BB levels for 14 years.
